Alex Downs - Cello
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Downs began his cello studies at the age of 13
under the tutelage of Avi Friedlander. While in Alabama, Downs studied at the Alabama
School of Fine Arts which he graduated from in 2015.
Following his attendance of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Downs attended the University of North Florida where he studied with Dr. Nick Curry from 2015 to 2019. While in his undergrad, Downs had the
unique privilege of attending multiple prestigious summer programs which include: the Green
Mountain Chamber Music Festival, the Sitka Cello Seminar, and the Meadowmount School
of Music.
During his time under Dr. Curry, Downs has also had the opportunity to work with
many accomplished cello soloists and pedagogues such as: Hans Jensen, Alisa
Weilerstein, Joshua Roman, Clive Greensmith, and David Finckel.
Currently, Downs enjoys teaching at the Jacksonville School of Music and the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts; He also indulges in playing chamber music with fellow colleagues.
