Vicky Ozment - Violin
Music has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Some of my happiest early childhood memories are of my mother singing and playing the piano in my family’s living room. When I was four years old, she put me in piano lessons. She added violin lessons when I was eight and, after a year of studying both, I focused on violin as my principal instrument.
I took both private and group lessons as a member of the First Coast Suzuki Players for 10 years. Then I studied under Professor Aaron Krosnick at Jacksonville University (JU) for another four years and graduated in 2002. Having a particular love for orchestral music, I was in the JU Community Orchestra before, during, and after college. I’ve also had many years of experience playing in quartets and small ensembles. Having been trained in classical music, I branched out a few years ago into fiddling and bluegrass to add to my repertoire.
Thus far, I’ve been playing the violin for 32 years and have taught for seven. I have successfully prepared students for recitals, weddings, and audition into the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra. I consider it a great honor to be able to share my love of music with students, watch them sharpen their skills, and inspire them to further development of their talent.
Because not all students learn the same way, I tailor my teaching methods to their individual learning styles. I use the Suzuki method, traditional instruction, and often a combination of the two. Special emphasis is placed on proper position and technique development. In addition, I give instruction in basic music theory and ear training so that students can understand the music and play better in tune.
I do my best to make learning as enjoyable as possible, with just the right amount of challenge to keep it interesting. Engineering student success by providing the knowledge, skills, and encouragement they need is what I love most about teaching.
